A watchmaker by profession, he was working as a wharf labourer in 1956 when he and his wife (Gwendoline Patricia Lorkin whom he had married in 1951) were accused of being members of the Australian Communist Party by State M.P. Frank Scully on the basis of evidence of a third party. Bruce and his wife denied the third parties claims. Bruce later became a Commonwealth Public Servant in 1962 at the Post Master General’s as a Watch and Clock Maker.
