Harold was in the Forrest Swimming team, and became a Junior Clerk after leaving School. Once of age he enlisted in the 27th Battalion where he saw service in the Solomons and New Britain. He joined the Education Department as a teacher in 1950 at Queenscliffe High School. The following year he married Elizabeth Swaby in 1951.
