A Matric student from Box Hill High School, he played in the Yarra Football Team.  He picked up Honours in Geography, British History and Social Studies before joining the Education Department in 1954, attending the Toorak Teachers’ College 1954-1955 and then teaching at various state schools.  He married Beverley Joan Homes in 1961, a marriage that lasted until his death.
