Leslie attended Williamstown High School, transferring to Melbourne High School to complete his Leaving Honours.  He went on to study science at Melbourne University, joining the Australian Commonwealth Public Service as a Meteorologist in 1950.  He then changed careers to teaching, joining the Victorian Education Department in 1951, before completing his Trained Primary Teachers Certificate and becoming a registered Teacher in late 1956.  He migrated to Canada before 1963 where he worked as a High School teacher.
