Joyce migrated to Australian at the age of 7 with her family, her father Archibald being a Methodist Minister, who first came to Australia in 1914, from Truro, in the UK. They spent a number of years in Tasmania, where Joyce completed her High School education at Ulverstone. She completed her nursing exams at Epworth in 1945.

Joyce started at MHS in 1980 teaching Humanities and helped run the Public Speaking Club from 1981 with Mr Lawrence, before leaving at the end of 1987.
