MHS 1962 – 1965
Petro attended Toorak Central School before coming to Melbourne High School in 1962. His father Constantino was a storeman at General Motors Holden. A noted athlete, Petro played half-back in the School’s Under 15 XVIII, of which he was Vice-Captain the following year. In 1964 he played in the Under 16 XVIII. For Forrest House, he competed in the 100 and 220 yards from 1962-1964.
In his Matric year, Petro was elected Form Captain (Simon Crean was his Vice-Captain), SRC Rep and was on the Magazine Committee, but dropped all sports. A noted personality, he was known as the Greek Volcano, who was never at a loss for words. A brilliant scholar, he received Honours in British and Modern History, Social Studies and Economics, along with a Commonwealth Scholarship, and the prestigious Senior Scholarship, awarded to the top 50 students in Victoria.
His younger brother Matthew would follow Petro to MHS in 1968, he was Under 15 Athletics Champion in 1968, as well as playing football. Becoming a solicitor after MHS, Matthew died in 1992.
Petro was guest speaker at the MHSOB Annual Dinner in 1995 and for the School was the speaker for the 2013 Speech Night.
